The Douglas Shire is known as the "Reef and Rainforest Coast" and for good reason. Side by side lay the dual World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. During the months of the "Dry Season" (May – November), as the name suggests, there is very little rain in the region making it the perfect spot for outdoor weddings. If you choose an outdoor location for your wedding ceremony my checklist of Things to Consider may be useful.
St Mary's By the Sea is the beautiful non-denominational wedding chapel located in the heart of Port Douglas. An historic church built in the 1880’s, the chapel has been fully restored and features a huge glass altar window which offers breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and rainforest clad mountains, stained glass windows, traditional wooden pews and a church bell which will be ringing on your wedding day.
As part of the Sheraton Mirage Resort, Crystal Wedding Chapel, is perfectly poised on Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas. The glass walled chapel enjoys stunning views over the Coral Sea. Dappled in natural sunlight and serenaded by the gentle lapping of the waves the Crystal Wedding Chapel is a unique and perfect venue to begin life's voyage together.
This is the ideal spot for an outdoor ceremony, overlooking the Coral Sea to the Daintree Rainforest. Facing north-west, Rex Smeal Park is protected from south-easterly breezes and has the added advantage of providing shade from the sun and boasts spectacular sunsets and majestic coconut palms.
Enjoy a beachside wedding on one of the beautiful beaches in the shire. Four Mile Beach, Oak Beach, Newell Beach are but a few of the superb locations to choose from.
There is a selection of rainforest resorts that can offer accommodation, reception and a beautiful location for your ceremony all at the one place. If you are looking for a fuss-free wedding I am happy to offer suggestions on some of the different options available to you.
You may decide that a private holiday home or one of our award-winning 5 star restaurants is more in line with your dream ceremony. You may even like the idea of marrying in the morning before setting sail for a beautiful tropical island where you and your friends can spend the afternoon exploring the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. I can offer you a list of choices to get you started. Whatever your dreams are, I can help you make them a reality.
Should you choose an outdoor venue for your ceremony you may require a permit from local council or other government agencies. Call Cairns Regional Council on (07) 40 999 444 for more information.
